The developer of an ambitious mixed-use project in Springfield said $2 million in state money to assist the downtown, pledged today by Gov. Deval Patrick, could help make his venture a reality.
“Whatever is good for Springfield is good for our project,” said William Connolly, managing partner of Connolly & Partners, the Boston-based developer chosen by the city to turn a pair of abandoned historic buildings in Court Square into a downtown destination.
Patrick visited Springfield to unveil more than $2.1 million in grants to help boost the region’s economy. The state support includes a Massachusetts Opportunity Relocation and Expansion grant to improve public infrastructure along Armory Street and the establishment of a Growth Districts Initiative that offers a state partnership with the city to target areas for commercial, residential or mixed-use growth.
“We believe that it is absolutely essential to the commonwealth as a whole that Springfield get stronger and stay strong,” Patrick said to crowd of more than 100 in front of City Hall. “And we are doing what we can.”
As part of his visit, Patrick toured downtown Main Street with Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno.
Last month, the Springfield Redevelopment Authority selected Connolly for a $50 million restoration of 3-7 and 13-31 Elm St. in Court Square. Under the proposal, Connolly plans to build a project that includes a 100-room extended-stay hotel, 50 apartments, ground-floor retail with a restaurant and a 120-space parking garage behind the complex.
