The city of Boston has been awarded three EPA Brownfields cleanup grants totaling $503,500.
The three sites targeted for cleanup are in the Dorchester, Roxbury and Hyde Park neighborhoods of Boston.
Hazardous substance grant funds will be used to clean up the 191 Bowdoin St. site in Dorchester, where elevated concentrations of heavy metals and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons have been detected.
Grant funds will also be used to clean up the former Modern Electroplating and Enameling Facility at 2430 Washington St. in Roxbury where a variety of metals and volatile organic compounds have been found on the premises.
The third portion of grant funds will be used to clean up the Former Lewis Chemical property on Fairmount Court in Hyde Park. This facility’s primary function was to collect, process and transport hazardous waste until it closed in 1983.
The EPA's Brownfields program promotes redevelopment of America's estimated 450,000 abandoned and contaminated waste sites.
