A former Catholic parish in Somerville is ready to be redeveloped into a mixed-use village. Shovels officially go into the ground on Wednesday.

A project of the nonprofit Somerville Community Corp., the Saint Polycarp Village Apartments will include the construction of 24 affordable apartment units and first-floor retail space in a LEED-certifiable green building. 

The 3.5-acre site was closed by the Archdiocese of Boston in 2002 and purchased by the Somerville Community Corp. in March 2006.
